CYCLONE SITUATION REPORT NO. 6
Dated the: 29th May, 2001, 1200 hours
SUBJECT: CYCLONE OVER ARABIAN SEA – SITUATION REPORT
Following Messages were received from IMD:
- At 0830 hours on 22nd May, 2001: A low pressure area formed over East Central Arabian Sea on 21.5.2001 and rapidly concentrated into a deep depression. It further concentrated into a cyclonic storm about 350 kms west-south west of Goa. Likely to cross between Karwar and Ratnagiri by 23.5.2001 afternoon.
- At 1730 hours on 22nd May, 2001:
The cyclonic storm over East Central Arabian Sea has slowly moved eastwards and lay centred about 300 kms south west of Goa. It is likely to intensify further and move in an east-north easterly direction and expected to cross the coast between Karwar and Ratnagiri by 23.5.2001 afternoon.
- At 0530hours on 23rd May, 2001:
The cyclonic storm over East Central Arabian Sea further intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and lay centred about 300 kms west southwest of Goa. It is likely to intensify further and move in a north easterly direction and expected to cross the coast between Goa and Ratnagiri by 24.5.2001 forenoon.
- At 0830 hours on 23rd May, 2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over East Central Arabian Sea lay centred about 300 kms west of Goa and likely to intensify further move in a northerly direction initially and expected to cross the Maharashtra coast between Devgarh and Alibagh by 24.5.2001 afternoon. However, since there is some possibility that the system may continue to move north wards, it poses a potential threat to Gujarat coast line also.
- At 1730 hours on 23rd May,2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over East Central Arabian Sea lay centred about 270 kms of West South West of Ratnagiri and likely to intensify further and continue moving in a northerly direction. It is likely to cross South Gujarat Coast between Surat and Verawal by morning of 25.5.2001.
- At 0530 hours on 24th May, 2001 :
The severe cyclonic storm over East Central Arabian Sea lay centred about 550 kms South of Verawal and likely to cross South Gujarat Coast between Surat and Verawal by evening of 25.5.2001.
- At 1130 hours on 24th May, 2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over East Central Arabian Sea lay centred about 500 kms South of Verawal. It is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time but possibly recurve and cross Gujarat Coast between Verawal and Surat by 26.5.2001.
- At 1800 hours on 24th May, 2001 :
The very severe cyclonic storm over Arabian sea has intensified further with associated wind speeds of 200 to 220 kmph, moved slowly in a Northwesterly direction since morning and lies centred about 500 km South Southwest of Veraval at 1430 hrs IST of today. The system is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time but possibly recurve and cross Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Surat by Morning of 26.5.2001.
- At 2200 hours on 24th May, 2001:
The very severe cyclonic storm over Arabian sea remained practically stationery and lies centred about 500 km South Southwest of Veraval at 1730 hrs IST of today. The system is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time but possibly recurve and cross Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Surat by evening of 26th May, 2001.
- At 0600 hours on 25th May, 2001 :
The very severe cyclonic storm over Arabian sea remained practically stationery and lies centred about 500 km South Southwest of Veraval at 0230 hrs IST of today. The system is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time but possibly recurve and cross Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Surat by evening of 26th May, 2001.
- At 1130 hours on 25th May, 2001:
The very severe cyclonic storm over Arabian sea remained practically stationery and lies centred about 500 km South Southwest of Veraval at 0830 hrs IST of today. It has slightly weakened and presently the maximum wind speed is 180-200 kmph. The system is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time but possibly recurve and cross-Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Naliya by 26th night/27th May morning.
- At 1730 Hours on 25th May, 2001:
The very severe cyclonic storm over Arabian sea remained practically stationery and weakened slightly and lies centred about 500 km South Southwest of Veraval at 0830 hrs IST of today. It has slightly weakened and presently the maximum wind speed is 180-200 kmph. The system is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time but possibly recurve and cross-Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Naliya by 26th night/27th May morning.
- At 0600 Hours on 26th May, 2001:
The very severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea has moved slightly westward with its centre about 550 KM South West of Veraval at 0230 Hrs IST of today. The associated wind speeds are of the order of 150-160 KMPH. The system is likely to move in a North-Northwesterly direction for some time, but possibly recurve and cross Gujarat coast between Veraval and Naliya by 27 May afternoon .
- At 1130 Hours on 26th May, 2001:
The very severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea has shown slight Northwesterly movement since yesterday. It has also weakened and lay centred at 0830 Hrs IST of today, May 26 about 500 KM South-Southwest of Porbandar as a severe cyclonic storm with associated wind speeds of 100 to 120 KMPH The weakening trend is likely to persist and the system is still likely to recurve and cross the Gujarat coast between Veraval and Naliya on 27th night/28 morning with wind speed of the order of 70-KMPH .
- At 0530 Hours on 27th May, 2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea has moved slightly northwards since last evening. It lay centered at 0230 hours IST of today, the 27th May about 460 KM South-Southwest of Porbandar with associated wind speed of 100-120 KMPH. The system is likely to move in a Northerly direction for some more time and possibly recurve and cross Gujarat coast between Veraval and Naliya by the afternoon of 28th May with wind speed of the order of 70
KMPH.
- At 1730 Hours on 27th May, 2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian sea has moved slowly Northwards and lay centered at 1430 hours IST of today, the 27th May about 400 KM Southwest of Porbandar with associated wind speeds of 100-120 KMPH. The system is likely to move in a Northerly direction for some more time and possibly recurve and cross Gujarat coast between Veraval and Naliya by the night of 28th or Morning of 29th May.
- At 0530 Hours on 28th May, 2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian sea has moved slowly Northwards since last evening and lay centered at 0230 hours IST of today, the 28th May about 300 KM Southwest of Porbandar with associated wind speeds of 70-80 KMPH. The system is likely to move in a Northerly direction and recurve and cross Gujarat coast between Veraval and Naliya by the morning of 29th May.
- At 0830 Hours on 28th May, 2001:
The severe cyclonic storm over the Arabian sea further weakened since yesterday to a Cyclonic Storm. It has moved North-Northeastwards with associated wind speeds of 70-80 KMPH and lay centered at 0530 hours IST of today, the 28th May about 250 KM Southwest of Porbandar. It is likely to move in a North-Northeast direction and recurve and cross Gujarat coast between Veraval and Naliya late tonight/tomorrow morning.
- At 1130 Hours on 28th May, 2001:
The morning’s cyclonic storm over the Arabian sea has moved slowly Northwards. It lay centered at 0830 hours IST of today, the 28th May about 250 KM Southwest of Porbandar with associated wind speeds of 70-80 kmph. The system is likely to move in a North-Northeasterly direction and cross Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Naliya by late night of 28th May/early morning of 29th May.
- At 1730 Hours on 28th May, 2001:
The morning’s cyclonic storm over the Arabian sea has moved slowly Northwards. It lay centered at 1430 hours IST of today, the 28th May about 200 KM Southwest of Porbandar with associated wind speeds of 70-80 kmph. The system is likely to move in a North-Northeasterly direction and cross Gujarat Coast between Veraval and Naliya by late night of 28th May or early morning of 29th May.
- At 0600 Hours on 29th May, 2001:
The cyclonic storm over the Arabian sea has weakened into a depression at 0230 hours IST of today about 50 KM. West of Porbandar. It is likely to weaken further over sea itself and become unimportant.
Rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at many places in Andaman &
Nicobar islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam ,Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur,
Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Gujarat State, Konkan &
Goa, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala & Lakshadweep at a few places in Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa,
Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, East
Rajasthan, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka and isolated places over the rest of the country.
Heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Andaman & Nicobar islands, Gujarat State, Coast Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep during next 24 hours.
This is the last cyclone warning numbered bulletin for this cyclone.
Action Taken by Department of Agriculture & Cooperation

On 22.5.2001:
- Control Room working round the clock and in constant touch with IMD and respective State Governments.
- E-mail/Fax messages were sent to the Chief Secretaries of Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka informing about the cyclonic storm and requested them to take all necessary precautionary and preparatory measures.
- Departments of Telecommunications, Power, Surface Transport, Port, Road Highways, Railway Board, Defence, Home Affairs, Health, Drinking Water Supply, I &B, Civil Aviation were requested to alert there field machinery and take all precautionary measures in regard to making stand by arrangements and providing support to the State administration
On 23.5.2001
- The latest report of the IMD was communicated to the respective State Governments and Central Government Ministries/Departments for further necessary action.
- The Cabinet Secretary held a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) at 1530 hours and reviewed the preparatory measures undertaken by the respective States and Central Government Ministries/Departments.
- Alert message was issued to the State Governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra to keep State machinery stand by and activate in timely evacuation of people from targeted low lying areas.
On 24.5.2001
- The Senior Officers of the Department and the Control Room staff were in regular touch with officers State Government of
Gujarat.
- The Cabinet Secretary held a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) at 1530 hours and reviewed the preparatory measures undertaken by the respective States and Central Government Ministries/Departments.
On 25.5.2001
- The Senior Officers of the Department and the Control Room staff were in regular touch with officers State Government of
Gujarat.
- The Cabinet Secretary held a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) at 1430 hours and reviewed the preparatory measures and action taken by the State Government of Gujarat/Maharashtra and Central Government Ministries/Departments.
- Alert message was issued to the State Governments of Gujarat and Maharashtra to keep State machinery stand by and activate in timely evacuation of people from targeted low lying areas.
On 26.5.2001
- The Senior Officers of the Department and the Control Room staff were in regular touch with Officers State Government of
Gujarat.
- The Cabinet Secretary held a meeting of National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) at 1130 hours and reviewed the preparatory measures and action taken by the State Government of Gujarat/Maharashtra and Central Government Ministries/Departments.
On 28.5.2001
- The Senior Officers of the Department and the Control Room staff were in regular touch with Officers State Government of
Gujarat.
- Alert message was issued to the State Government of Gujarat to keep State machinery stand by and activate in timely evacuation of people from targeted low lying areas.
- Alert message was issued to the Central Government Ministries/Departments to activate their field machinery and provide necessary assistance to the Government of Gujarat.
Action Taken by the State Government of Gujarat
- The Chief Minister convened an emergency meeting of Secretaries and instructed them to be more vigilant and prepared to face the cyclone.
- The Chief Secretary held meetings on 22/23/24.5.2001and instructed the coastal collectors to remain in their headquarters and reviewed the preparedness position.
- The Chief Secretary reviewed the planning of evacuation of people of coastal areas, deployment of officials and inter Departmental coordination for rescue and relief.
- State Control Room is already operating with well equipments and well manned staff. Satellite phones, hot lines, land lines, computers with internet facility etc., already established in the Control Room and put into functioning. Likewise district Control Rooms with similar facilities are also functioning.
- Senior Officers functioning from the State Control Room to monitor and liaise with the districts.
- State has deputed guardian Ministers and Senior IAS Officials to supervise, assist and coordinate the situation in the districts.
- Coast guard authorities at Mumbai as well as in Gujarat have started preventive measures.
- Salt works closed down and workers shifted to safer places.
- Fishermen
warned to be at safe coast sides.
- Rescue related equipments, power supply, stock of essential commodities reviewed and alternate arrangement kept ready at district levels.
- Wide publicity of do's and don'ts given through All India Radio, Doordrashan, Cable Operators and Newspapers.
