have caused extensive damage in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the States of
Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and UT of Pondicherry.
The death toll has already reached a figure of 7368.
This will go up once
confirmation regarding 5900 missing persons/feared dead in the Nicobar Group
of

The Tsunami affected a total of 2260 Kms. of the coast line besides the

The
second meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted for monitoring relief
and rehabilitation measures was chaired by the Prime Minister on
(i)
One officer each
has been positioned in mainland and Car Nicobar for preparation of an
integrated Plan for relief and rehabilitation.
(ii)
4053 tourist have been taken out of
Port Blair by Indian Air lines and Jet Airways. Special flights are continuing .
(iii)
5.2 MT of drinking water airlifted
and airlifting of 3.5 MT and 20,000 pouches are lined up.
(iv)
MHA is tying up arrangements with
Ministry of Civil Aviation for dedicated supply of drinking water pending long
term arrangements.
(v)
State
Governments/UTs Administration concerned have been requested to make assessment
of damage to fishing boats and fishing nets.
(vi)
Seven officers of the Ministry of
Home Affairs have been deputed to
assist the States/UTs and provide an interface between the Centre and
the States/UTs.
Five
aftershocks of varying intensities between 5.1 and 6.1 in Richter scale
on 29th December and four aftershocks
between 5.2 and 5.8 in Richter scale were experienced on
IMD
informed about the message originating from Australian pacific warning center
stating that another tsunami may hit
The
massive relief and rescue operations mounted by the Government of India in
association with the States/UTs are continuing round the clock.
The priority is on relief supplies and evacuation in
An Ex-gratia of Rs.1.00 lakh has been announced to the next of the kin of the
deceased from the PM National Relief Fund, in addition to the assistance
available from the National Contingency Relief Fund. The National fund has been
augmented by Rs. 500.00 crore.
The funds are being released to the States/UTs pending
final assessment of requirements. The
Cabinet has also decided to donate one month salary to the PM National Relief
Fund. The Prime Minister has appealed to the people donate generously to the PM
National Relief Fund and also requested the Government employees to contribute
at least a day’s salary.
· Damage to harbour and Jetty in both civil and naval port facilities.
· One harbour at Port Blair is now fully functioning and is receiving large ships.
· About 60% capacity made functional
·
Two earthquake design
experts stationed at Port Blair for advice on
reconstruction of Harbour/Jetty
Civil Aviation:
· Port Blair airport which was damaged is now functional.
· 4100 passengers evacuated between 27th to 29th December.
·
Indian Airlines and Jet Airways are operating to evacuate the
passengers..
Telecom:
·
The telephone facilities which were temporarily disrupted have now
been made functional but there is
congestion in connectivity in some areas.
Relief and Rescue:
·
Andaman Group of Islands was
affected to a much lesser extent. Relief
measures by UT Administration is continuing.
NICOBAR ISLANDS
Shipping:
· All small harbours and jetties have been damaged and not possible to park any vessels. Efforts on to restore the facilities.
· Pending restoration of shipping facilities, the supplies are being airlifted.
Civil Aviation:
· The airport made functional for Air Force flights for both An-32 and IL-76 flights.
· The link established on the small airstrip at Camp Bell Bay and the Dornier aircraft is running.
· MOD has pressed into service 3 IL-76 and 5 AN-32 aircrafts specifically for relief operations to Car Nicobar.
· The telephone lines and equipments completely washed away.
· MHA dispatched 8 satellite phones with two operators. The link established at Car Nicobar from 28th December 2004.
· Of the above, 6 satellite Phones made available to the Deputy Commissioner, Car Nicobar for being installed in the other Islands.
·
BSNL
deputing 6 teams of 18 people along with the equipments to establish
point-to- point communication in these Group of Islands.
Rescue and relief :
· 1272 people were evacuated between 27th to 29 December.
· Evacuation of about 700 persons from remote locations in Great Nicobar is progress.
· MHA have organized airlifting of 60 MT of relief material (dry food, sugar , rice , milk powder) between 27th to 28 December
· About 48 MT of relief material airlifted between 29th and 30th Dec. 2004
· 10,000 of milk, 3000 packets of bread, 50,000 packets of biscuits, 15,000 packets of other dry foods and 5,000 packets of food were delivered/dispatched on 29th December,2004
· One MT water bottles sent Nicobar ex Bangalore on 29th December,2004
· 4 MT of emergency medicines dispatched ex Ahmedabad on 28th December,2004 and 3.5 MT on 29th December,2004.
· About 12,000 tents have been dispatched from various locations on 29th December,2004. Sizeable number of tents have been mobilized and planned for airlifting on 30th December,2004.
· 6 MT of Sarees and blankets dispatched on 27th December,2004. Additional about 10,000 blankets dispatched on 29th December,2004. 93,000 clothes for ladies, gents and kids dispatched on 29th December,2004.
· 20 DG sets and 20 pump sets dispatched on 29th December ex Bangalore. Further, dispatch planned for 30th December.
· Lighting items like torches, hurricane lamps, candles etc. dispatched in sizeable number of 29th and further lined up for dispatch on 30th Dec.
· Household kits, of sizeable number have been dispatched
· One specialist team of 40 personnel each of CISF and ITBP made available for relief operations.
· One Platoon of BSF has been airlifted for assisting the A & N Administration in cremation/burial dead bodies.
· Three Naval ships reached Car Nicobar on 27th Dec. 2004.
· Two coast Guard ships with relief material and medical team left for Campbell Bay.
· One naval ship and one Coast Guard ship left for Hut Bay.
· Two Dornier aircraft dropped food and water at Hut Bay and Camp Bell Bay.
· Ship from Kolkatta is planned for movement on 30th Dec. 2004.
MAINLAND (ANDHRA PRADESH,
KERALA, TAMILNADU, PONDICHERRY)
Shipping:
· All seaports harbors are now fully functional including for export consignments.
Civil Aviation :
·
All Airports are functional.
National highway:
·
All national Highway are functional.
Telecommunications:
·
There was temporary disruption in telecom facilities in the
coastal areas. The telecommunication
facilities have since been restored.
Relief and Rescue:
· Pondicherry has requested for relief material. One IL 76 load of 20 MT has been dispatched on 28.12.04 ex-Mumbai; courtesy Govt. of Maharashtra.
· 400 CRPF recruits were made available to govt. of Tamilnadu.
· 4 Coast Guards ships and 5 Naval ships helped in search and rescue in Andhra Pradesh.
· One Coast Guard Dornier and two helicopters were deployed for search and rescue in Kerala.
· Two Chetak Helicopters and Two Dornier Aircrafts were deployed for search and rescue in Tamil Nadu.
· The State Government of Andhra Pradesh had taken relief, rescue and evacuation measures. State Government evacuated about 9000 persons to the safer places and provided food packets. Medical teams have been deputed in the affected villages.
· The Navy had sent their diving team to assist in the rescue operations. People reported stranded have mostly been evacuated by the State Government with the assistance from diving teams of Navy.
· A three member team headed by Consultant in Medicine had reached Chennai and is coordinating with 15 member team constituted from CGHS Chennai for providing medical relief.
· The State Government of Tamil Nadu has diverted municipal Staff to help in the cremation/burial of dead bodies.
· Army has been pressed into service at Nagapattinam to restore the road as well to assist in the extraction of bodies from the boats, which are stacked one over the other. It is expected that with this manpower the bodies will be cremated/buried in a day or two.
· Pondicherry Administration has requested to provide one lakh pieces each of Blankets, Sarees, Dhotis and Bedsheets,50,000 Pieces of CGI Sheets and 18000 Pieces of fishing nets. The government of Karnataka has been requested to provide the relief materials and move by road.
